Serene Saturday

Well, I've been out and about mostly today(Saturday) which has been a nice change from recent weeks. It must be a testament to how much I haven't been doing though, because I was tired by the time we got back in the afternoon. BUT, it was a good day and I did get some pictures, but I apologize because they were taken on my phone. We were in a rush out the door that I forgot my camera.

I was on a walk though, here are some of my pictures. The weather was pretty nice even though it looks dreary. It was overcast but not raining, all in all a good temperature and not too bright of sunshine.
Some of the geese were out but only a few. My conclusion is that some have headed back (or possibly never migrated this winter) from the south, but it seems most have no returned yet. I was at this lake a little bit ago with my boyfriend John, in the fall I think, and the geese were all over the shore. We had brought stale bread to feed to the geese. Needless to say, the geese got pretty competitive over the bread bits we were throwing to them. It was funny and yet not funny since geese are known for their confident nature, must less afraid of humans than your average duck.

So also at this lake are really old mill stones. The lake was created by a dam and is really just part of a river. Way back, (~1915 or so) there apparently were milling stones all along the river for making wood pulp, and eventually paper and things. Here's a couple:

There are similar looking stones that people use for grinding grains. Usually those have finer settings so the grain can be used to cook or bake with. The next are just a couple pictures of (I believe) a willow tree which my phone camera just doesn't do justice to. There were pretty in real life though.

That was mostly my Saturday goings-ons. The evening was spent eating dinner and playing some Assassin's Creed, which I am getting more and more sucked into.

Enjoy! (If you're read this far anyway =P)

  1. It's refreshing to see lakes and trees as I am surrounded by cement and bricks.

+1 for Willow trees, I love them.

    1. It is the one nice thing about living in WV, there are plenty of places to "get away" for an hour or so and just be outside, no big buildings or anything.

    2. I don;t get any notifications when someone replies to my comments. Does anyone else have this problem?

    3. Yes...I've discovered some by accident, but I also get emailed when someone comments, so that helps.

    4. hmmm... I get emailed when someone comments on my blog but not if someone replies to my comment on someone else's blog.

  2. Nothing wrong with your camera phone, clearly! I really missed mine walking the dog on Saturday.

There's something about millstones. I am reminded of Cromwell's grim consolation when things weren't going his way: " The wheels of the Lord grind slowly: but they grind exceeding small".

    1. Well, my phone is not the best, while my digital camera has MUCH higher resolution. I guess for a blog they're alright, but I like to have my pictures for later, and it's a little nicer if they're higher resolution.

The millstones are cool, I've seen them before, but I always like seeing old stuff that people obviously used to use, but now just sit as artifacts, fascinates me.
